We respond to emergencies for fire, medical, public assist, search and rescue.
Fire – includes structures, vehicles, wildfires, brush fires, etc.
Medical – we have trained Emergency Medical Responders (EMR)
Search & Rescue – this includes motor vehicle accidents (MVA), search for lost person(s), all types of rescues including stranded on roof, elevator problem, etc.
We train every Tuesday evening beginning at 7 pm to respond to these emergencies. You may see us out in the community flowing water from a dry hydrant or practicing drafting water from a pond or lake, etc. Sometimes we are in the parking lot at the station training for MVA, connect to hydrants, drafting from a drop tank, etc. We also do a lot of our rescue extrication training at the station. Sometimes we are offered a house to burn that the owner wants removed so you may see us training in that house for several months before we burn it. It gives us the opportunity to search in low visibility and to find the seat of the fire to put it out. If the weather is too bad, we train indoors at our Scaly Mountain station – SCBA training, medical training, some rescue training including rappelling, etc.
Not all of us hold the hose and put the wet stuff on the hot stuff. Some of us are doing other jobs on a fire scene such as connecting to hydrants, getting the tools firefighters need, engineering the truck, coordinating automatic aid from other fire departments, accounting for everyone on scene, performing rehabilitation for firefighters. There are many jobs on a scene that do not require holding the hose and getting close to the fire. On medical and rescue scenes there are also many different jobs that need to be done. We train to do all of them. Come join us and see where you fit in.
